Afemai Traditional Events

Events

While many traditional Afemai events have historical roots, their specific dates are not always fixed and may vary by year or community

Some dates have been observed for 2025, but the calendars for future events are often announced closer to the date. Traditional Afemai events are often timed in coordination with local or seasonal factors rather than a standardized calendar.

Festivals with potentially variable dates

These are some of the traditional festivals among the Afemai people, with approximate timeframes:
  • Adu Ikukun Festival: A festival known for its music, dance, and colorful displays. It is traditionally held around February or March.
  • Ohonomoimen Festival: Celebrated by the Iuleha clan, this event typically occurs during the dry season, which lasts from November to February.
  • New Yam Festival: Many communities within the Afemai region celebrate this annual event, which is tied to the harvest season. The specific timing can vary by community, and announcements are often made locally.

    Events with recently announced dates

Some events are organized by community groups and have been announced for specific dates in 2025 .

    • Irekpai Day 2025: An event for the Irekpai community in Etsako West LGA. It was scheduled for September 25th to 27th, 2025.
    • Fugar Cultural Day 2025: Hosted by the Fugar Progressive Union for the Fugar community, this event was scheduled for August 30th, 2025, in Lagos.
    • Afenmai Cultural Day 2025: The Etsako Club ’81 hosted a cultural day in Lagos on February 16th, 2025.

    • How to find event datesFor the most accurate and current event dates, consider the following methods:

      • Monitor community announcements: Many Afemai events are announced on social media groups, particularly on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Searching for specific community names (e.g., “Fugar Cultural Day”) can yield results.
      • Consult local community leaders: For traditional festivals, the dates may be determined by community elders or local leaders. Checking with these authorities is often the most reliable source.
      • Contact Afemai organizations: Groups like the Afemai Sons and Daughters Initiative or local cultural associations often have information on upcoming events.
